How MogPhonics Works
MogPhonics is a comprehensive, multi-faceted learning system designed to make reading fun and accessible for all children. Our unique approach combines three key elements:
The flash cards introduce children to the phonic rule being taught. They then progress to the book covering the rule, and once the book has been read, they play the board game.
FLASH CARDS
- 60 vibrant cards featuring Mog characters
- 5 color-coded suits covering 10 phonic combinations
- Used to reinforce phonic rules before reading the books
12 HARD COVER BOOKS
Teachers and parents can use the stories in multiple ways to enhance reading, spelling and language development. Almost entirely decodable, the series introduces phonic concepts in a structured and systematic manner.
The vocabulary used throughout the series develops sequentially as the children learn to work with more complex reading and spelling patterns.
Each book revises the characters, places and items from the previous story, building familiarity and confidence with reading vocabulary.
The accessibility of the text is enhanced through the font size and style, and the use of colour to emphasise the focus phonic pattern. This attention to detail is key when seeking to engage all learners.
Rhythmic ‘word tunes’ are a multisensory way of reinforcing phonological skills. Incorporating a rhythmic element into the learning process keeps children engaged. Each phonic rule is reinforced by the 'word tune' which creates a lively rhythm that the children enjoy clappin along to as they sing.
The stunning illustrations bring the text to life and capture the imagination of readers young and old!
The oral language and writing potential stemming from the illustrations is limitless. The charming illustrations in all these books provide visual support, enhance engagement, offer contextual clues, help build vocabulary, promote storytelling skills, and facilitate multisensory learning, all of which contribute to more effective reading instruction.

BOOK 1 The Big Trip of Dot and Dex
This alphabet book begins at the very foundation of the reading process: the letter-sound relationship. All the books adhere to the standard pattern of phonological and language acquisition.
The charming illustrations provide visual support, enhance engagement, offer contextual clues, help build vocabulary, promote storytelling skills, and facilitate multisensory learning, all of which contribute to more effective reading instruction.
BOOK 10 Mogs on Holiday
This book introduces the ’ve’ spelling for /v/ and is a treasure trove for vocabulary enriching exercises as well as developing relationships with the children and finding out more about their world.
BOOK 11 Mogs and Giants
This book introduces the spelling patterns for /j/; j, g, dge and ge.
The repetition of the word tune with clapping offers a break from the cognitive demands of the reading process and brings rhythm to oral expression. This is all helpful for phonological awareness and developing reading stamina.
The Board Game
At the heart of the MogPhonics Literacy Set is the MogPhonics Board Game - an interactive, fast-paced way to systematically reinforce phonics patterns through gameplay. As players navigate the colourful board, they'll perform different tasks using cards, apply decoding skills through challenges, and bring the delightful book characters to life.
The ergonomic design, durable components, and nuanced gameplay variations ensure MogPhonics provides an unparalleled phonics practice experience. Kids stay motivated by the immersive gameplay while getting the multi-modal encoding they need.
Phonics experts agree - engaging, multisensory materials are vital for students learning to read, especially those with reading difficulties.

Review of The MogPhonics Literacy Toolkit
by Jayne Bolton - Director of Specialist Dyslexic Clinic
The Mog books are a delightfully presented series of stories which will complement any Structured Synthetics Phonics Program.

As a learning support educator, I am always searching for suitable decodable texts to use with my students. Due to the limited word nature of such texts, it can be challenging to engage students with decodable stories.
Whilst offering children an accessible reading experience through its systematic structure, the Mog stories look like ‘real books’, feel like ‘real books’ and will spark the imagination of both boys and girls alike. For students with low reading stamina, the books have natural breaks within the stories and do not necessarily need to be read as a whole.
It is important for all children to practise new skills, however for children with reading difficulties, ‘overlearning’ is essential. The MogPhonics board game and flashcards offer a meaningful and fun way to sneak in extra reinforcement!
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to review the entire toolkit and trial it with young learners with dyslexia. The Mog Toolkit supports teachers and parents to develop a manageable path for teaching children’s reading and spelling skills whilst fostering a love of reading and books.
